Ribbon development
Ribbon development along the M1/N1 highways linking Johannesburg and Pretoria was particularly intense, with the residential areas of Midrand and Tembisa and commercial development along the N1 highway transforming a predominantly peri-urban agricultural area into a major urban conglomerate.
Contiguous development
Contiguous development of existing urban areas is also evident in the westwards expansion of Soweto in Johannesburg, eastwards expansion of Mamelodi in Pretoria and southwards expansion of Vosloorus and Duduza/Tsakane in Ekurhuleni. There was significant development in the Brits-Garankuwa-SoshanguweMabopane area to the north-west of Pretoria.
Strong infill/lateral expansion
Strong infill and lateral expansionis evident in the nodes on the fringes, such as the Vaal Triangle area (particularly in Vanderbijlpark and Bophelong) and Bronkhorstspruit area (including Ekangala). Some urbanisation of urban open spaces also occurred in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.
