Reasons for the disparity? Poor government communication

Possibly, residents simply don’t know what government does for them. This is not to excuse government and blame public ignorance. If residents really don’t know what they get from government then poor government communication is at fault.

In the 2011 QoL Survey we asked respondents how they normally hear about what their municipality is doing, and gave options such as newspapers, radio, ward councillors, the internet etc. Excluding those who said they did not care or want to hear anything from their municipality (i.e. counting only those who wanted to hear) 14% of respondents said ‘none of the above’.

We also asked respondents whether they had ever heard of the IDP – a municipality’s core development plan that defines its budget and service delivery agenda.

How do we account for the very low levels of satisfaction with government, when compared to reasonably high levels of satisfaction with the services that government provides?

A staggering 93% of respondents had never heard of it.
